LDMLFN TO OPEN URBAN INDIGENOUS EDUCATIONAL CENTRE

Lac des Mille Lacs First Nation (LDMLFN) Chief and Council is very pleased to announce the opening of an urban Indigenous school and daycare program in the former Hyde Park School located in Thunder Bay, Ontario. During 2019, LDMLFN will be developing services and programs at this new community-based education centre that promotes holistic wellness, enhances land and cultural skills development, as well as the delivery of Anishinabemowin.

“We are extremely excited to move forward with our vision of creating a culturally relevant, respectful and supportive space for our children and youth,” stated Chief White Cloud. “Chief and Council, along with our administrative staff, have been diligently working towards this goal and we are now able to bring this dream to fruition. Consultation with our community members determined what approach best supported our children and youth.  We have also secured financial funding from various government sources, along with support at the local public school board level.  We are excited to put into practice this exceptional model that best meets our children and family’s needs and educational goals.”

In October 2018, LDMLFN secured a lease agreement for the former Hyde Park School location on the City’s south side. The community plans to develop an educational centre which will grow into a community hub, supporting students and their caregivers through various “wrap-around” services.

LDMLFN is in the process of finalizing the licenses for the Little Turtles Daycare & Learning Centre.

“Our goal is to operate a daycare program with 32 spots at the centre. It will be grounded in Anishinabe culture and will promote the use and learning of Anishinabemowin,” stated Andy Graham, LDMLFN’s Director of Education.

Our new high school program, the Seventh Fire Education Centre, will be opening in February 2019; with plans to run a full Anishinabemowin immersion JK and SK program in the Fall of 2019.  The community is in the process of developing curriculum that meets core objectives required for students to receive full credits towards their Ontario high school diploma but will be heavily tailoring instructional methods so they are aligned with Anishinabe ways of learning and being. For example, students will have the opportunity to participate in land-based and ceremonial activities, made possible through LDMLFN’s existing infrastructure on its reserve lands west of Thunder Bay.

LDMLFN will be communicating information to community members on the secondary school application process. Applications will be available on LDMLFN’s official website www.lacdesmillelacsfirstnation.ca. While LDMLFN Band and community members will have priority enrolment in both the daycare and school programs, a considerable number of spots will be open to both Indigenous and non-Indigenous students/families throughout Thunder Bay.

It is anticipated that the new educational centre will create several job opportunities, all of which will be advertised on the LDMLFN website.
