To: Lac des Mille Lacs First Nation Members

From: Chief and Council

*Please note: A hard copy of this communique will be mailed out to Band Members along with the confidential attachments it references that cannot be posted on the website.

Boozhoo to our members and families!  What an exciting time this is for our First Nation as the Referendum Process for our Flood Claim Settlement in now underway.

Your Chief and Council have prepared a second FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) for your convenience and to provide answers to their members in a timely fashion.  We believe that in order to maintain good communication and to achieve positive results, our membership must be provided with accurate and up to date information.

Please find enclosed the most recent FAQ, along with material that was presented at our “Members Only” Meeting held last June 17th, 2016 in Thunder Bay, ON.  This information is not a part of the Settlement Agreement as it is between the First Nation and its membership, and not Canada and the Province of Ontario.

We understand that our members have questions on how the First Nation intends to distribute the proposed Settlement Agreement compensation monies. The presentation titled, “Lac des Mille Lacs First Nation – Flood Claim Settlement Discussions” is still considered confidential and cannot be shared with anyone who is not a Lac des Mille Lacs First Nation Band Member.  Although we are still bound by our confidentiality clause contained in our Flood Claim Negotiations Protocol, we have been given confirmation that we can now share this material, via mail, with our members.

It is our goal to remain as clear and straightforward as possible when it comes to assisting our members in understanding this process.  We recognize that legal documents can sometimes be challenging to read and there is a lot to digest in a short period of time. It is our hope that the enclosed materials will be of assistance to you.

Once we have completed the Referendum process, the First Nation will then be in a position to make an official public announcement.  Until that time, our members are reminded that the information contained in these materials are to remain strictly confidential and cannot be shared or posted in any manner.

We would like to say Chi Miigwetch to all of our families for their ongoing patience and support in this matter.  Stay strong and continue to walk the good path!
