NEWS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

THUNDER BAY, ON: Lac des Mille Lacs First Nation (LDMLFN) Chief and Council released the outcome of the recent appeal submitted last month—an appeal that challenged the results of the community’s June 2015 election.

“We have received the Adjudicator’s report and the appeal has been denied and dismissed,” stated Chief Whitecloud. “In the report, the Adjudicator, who is independent from the First Nation, found no grounds to support any violation of our Election Code or to support claims of fraudulent or corrupt practice related to the election.”

Last month, LDMLFN community members re-elected Chief Whitecloud and three (3) Councillors, Irma Churchill, Tracy Morrison and Carmel Zoccole. Two (2) new Councillors, Julia Rusnak and Gary Kishiqueb were also elected. As per the First Nation’s Custom Code, this Chief and Council will serve a three (3) year term.

“We would like to thank our community members for their patience and continued support during this process,” said Whitecloud. “We look forward to serving our community as we continue to move forward in a good way.”

Lac Des Mille Lacs First Nation is an Anishinabe community located within the Treaty 3 territory in northwestern Ontario. The First Nation has 610 Band Members, with approximately 45% residing in the northwestern Ontario region. The community has been engaged in the process of re-development and the reclamation of culture and history due to on-going and cumulative flooding that forced families off of their ancestral lands decades ago. In recent years, the community has achieved several major accomplishments, some of which include:

• The creation and implementation of a comprehensive community development plan to assist community members with returning to their ancestral lands in a safe, culturally-informed, and sustainable way;

• The construction of a magnificent community cultural complex that hosts cultural and educational events throughout the year and is available to community Elders during the Spring/Summer/Fall months;

• The construction of a community roundhouse and surrounding amenities which is used for different ceremonies throughout the year; • Increased funding to support the health and education of Band Members;

• The implementation of several cultural, health, and recreational activities held throughout the year for community members. • Increased economic development partnerships with industry partners and leaders;

• Increased employment opportunities for community members;

• Negotiations with the Federal and Provincial Governments on the First Nations flooding claim are nearing completion, with an anticipated fall or early winter referendum.
