From: Chief and Council Date: May 24, 2017

THUNDER BAY, ON—Your Chief and Council are overjoyed to be able to say that the long wait for signatures is over! The Settlement Agreement has now been signed off by all Ministers. We would like to say Chi Miigwetch to all involved for their assistance and co-operation in making this a priority for our First Nation. We acknowledge the many, many hours of work and tireless dedication that it took to overcome the challenges that we have had to face in bringing this claim to closure.

This week, we have been focusing on working with the bank in securing and finalizing the arrangements so that we can disburse the member’s portions first. This will significantly reduce the waiting period for payout to our members. We are excited for our members as many have expressed that, “this will be life-changing for them.” We want to take this opportunity to say thank you for your support throughout the years while we were negotiating this claim. We can now look ahead to the future!

Our bank has assured us that the monies will be ready for deposit into the First Nation’s account on Thursday, May 25th 2017. The First Nation’s bank is the Royal Bank of Canada. Your First Nation will make the transfer, for all of our adult members who have sent in their banking information and required identification, that same day. We are told it may take an additional day or so if an individual has an account with another bank or credit union.

It was after consultation with our Elder’s Council, who were in full agreement with Chief and Council, that we decided to move forward with securing the financial arrangements so that we could dispense the Member’s portion earlier.

If you have provided the Band Administration office with your pertinent and up-to-date banking information and required identification, we are optimistic that the member’s portions will be deposited with relative ease. Please note that the First Nation’s portion of the settlement will be deposited sometime within the 45-day period, which commenced with the last signature.

Note: This is exciting, positive news for our First Nation and members! We will be in a position to release an official “Joint Press Release” with both governments in the near future. We have mutually agreed to hold off on any public press release until we can arrange for an actual “commemorative signing date.” We ask members to honour this, and for the time being, celebrate within the First Nation and our families!! Your Chief and Council remain committed to advancing the First Nation and bettering the lives of our membership.
