Boozhoo Families & Members! Another busy and exciting year for the First Nation has come and gone and we are already in the third month of 2020! We enjoyed a relatively milder winter in this part of the country and are looking forward to warmer days ahead. Your Chief and Council continue to faithfully serve the people and would like to take this opportunity to update our membership on progress made within the First Nation this past winter.

On Saturday December 7, 2019, our children and families enjoyed our annual “Afternoon with Santa.” The afternoon was full of games, laughter, and fun! All of our little ones were presented with a wonderful gift, which brought big smiles to their faces. We had a total of 154 children attend! Our “Annual Christmas Feast” was held on Sunday December 8, 2019, and once again, we were not disappointed. The hall was filled with 565 excited members, staff and families. A delicious meal was served, songs were sung, gifts were given, and our people were filled with the joy of the season. It was wonderful to see so many happy, smiling faces coming together as family and community!

On Friday January 17, 2020, we held our AGM at our Lac des Mille Lacs Education Centre. We are proud and pleased to be able to report back to our members that the First Nation is in excellent financial health. We continue to receive outstanding audits each year and see much growth in our First Nation’s financial status. Acknowledgments go out to our dedicated council and staff who work tirelessly on behalf of our First Nation. Many attendees at the AGM commented that the “community” atmosphere was a welcome venue change, rather than conducting a colonial, lecture style AGM. The “English River Singers” drum group sang for us all evening while people danced and enjoyed the refreshments. It was a respectful and enjoyable atmosphere for our people. Miigwetch to all who came out!

Your Chief and Council are continuously seeking ways in which we can better assist our members and families. We are very pleased to announce that we are now able to extend our quarterly Elder Subsidy to all of our Elders who are 60 years of age and older. Previously, we were only able to assist our Elders aged 65 and over. We know this will make a positive change in our Elders lives and assist with costs associated with food, utilities, rent, insurance, etc. Our strong financial standing with regards to dividends earned through our Dallan Forestry Co., and our Future Generations Trust Fund has made this feasible for us to do.

A reminder goes out that although our new Administration Office (3rd floor) is complete, the 2nd floor of the building is still under construction. The 1st floor is now fully occupied with two of our Aboriginal partners: Levesque Enterprises (Dallan Forestry) and Neegani Investment Ltd (NADF.) We continue to receive great responses from visitors and guests coming into the building. It is a positive testament to what we can accomplish as a First Nation and as Indigenous organizations!

Lastly, the health and safety of our members are always foremost in our minds. Our Annual Elders Gathering and Powwow is scheduled to be held from Thursday June 18th through Sunday June 21st this year. Should we have to postpone or reschedule this event due to concerns over the worldwide, COVID-19 coronavirus, we will immediately advise our membership. We have attached a Health fact sheet on this matter.

Until we meet again, we wish you health and happiness!

Chief and Council
