COMMUNIQUE

To: Lac des Mille Lacs First Nation Band Members

From: Chief and Council

Date: November 30, 2016

~ HOLIDAY GREETINGS ~

As we approach the Christmas & Holiday Season, your Chief and Council would like to extend their very best wishes to all of our Lac des Mille Lacs First Nation Families and Community members. We would also like to take this opportunity to update our membership on two key areas and to ensure you have the most accurate information possible regarding these subject matters.

Flood Claim

Since receiving the official offer to settle for our flood claim in January 2016, your Chief and Council along with members of the Flood Claim Negotiations Team, have persisted in their efforts towards the completion and signing of the final Settlement Agreement.

It has been our goal to bring this agreement to a point where it could be presented to our LDMLFN Band Members who will then vote to either accept or reject the settlement offer through a scheduled Referendum. We are diligently working towards this, and it is our intention to be in the Referendum process this December.

We are excited to report that the Easement Agreement has been completed and we are in the process of finalizing the Settlement Agreement. We wish to thank everyone for their patience and support as we continue to work towards bringing our flood claim to a close. We also deeply understand the frustration that is sometimes felt as we await this settlement and we ask that you bear with us in these final details. We are almost there! Once we have the required signatures on the legal documents and agreements, we will proceed with the Referendum and mail out of the packages. Again, this is targeted to begin in the month of December 2016. Chi Miigwetch!

Annual Christmas Gift

With the hopes of brightening your holiday season, your Chief and Council are pleased to provide you with a special Christmas gift this year. Instead of the annual Walmart gift cards, we have determined that we are able to provide a more substantive gift. It was unanimously agreed by all of Chief and Council to give our members a monetary gift. After discussions with your Elders Council members, it was also unanimously agreed to proceed with their blessing.

We are pleased to be able to give our members a larger amount this year as we understand and acknowledge our people have been extremely patient and have many immediate needs. All adults will receive a gift of $1500.00, all youth 12-17 will receive a gift of $300.00 and all children 11 and under will receive a gift of $100.00.

We understand that there are financial pressures at this time of year, and on behalf of the First Nation, this gift is given with the hope that your Christmas and holiday season will be a little bit brighter. Our children and youth will still receive their gift from Santa, and our Elders will still receive their turkey and gift card! Your gift will be ready for distribution and mail out commencing Monday December 5th 2016. (No third party pick-ups. Individual registered band members can only pick up their own gift.) Please note: the Banquet room for the feast is filled to capacity. If you are already registered, and cannot attend, please call Honey at the office, as we have people on our waiting list. Thank you

Note: Your Annual Christmas Gift has nothing to do with the pending Flood Claim Settlement, and will not affect the proposed payout numbers. These are separate from each other. We are also reviewing and considering the possibility of assisting our retired elders (65+) with a semi-annual or quarterly subsidy, targeted for later in 2017.

~ Wishing all a Very Merry Christmas & Happy New Year from all of your Chief and Council! ~
