COMMUNIQUE
To: Lac des Mille Lacs First Nation Membership
From: Chief and Council
Date: April 5, 2017
THUNDER BAY, ON— The Lac des Mille Lacs First Nation Chief and Council is very pleased and excited to announce that their Members voted overwhelmingly in favour of accepting the Settlement offer, from Canada and Ontario, for their flood claim on Reserve 22A1. This announcement comes at the completion of the Referendum period, with polls closing today at 8:00 p.m. at the Fort William First Nation Arena.
“Chi miigwetch to all of our members who exercised their right to vote on this historical settlement offer which will have far reaching and positive effects for our community members and their future,” said Chief Whitecloud. “We appreciate the involvement of our members and the time they have taken to remain informed and involved in this process.”
All Registered Band Members 18 years of age or older as of today’s date, were mailed (via registered mail) a Referendum package by INAC’s Electoral Officer on Monday February 20, 2017. All of the details of the Settlement Agreement were included in this package, along with the Referendum ballot. All Registered Band Members received the option of either voting in person or through the mail-in ballot process.
“We would also like to, once again, acknowledge the efforts of our Flood Claim Negotiations Team for their tireless work and supreme efforts leading up to this vote,” said Chief Whitecloud. “A tremendous amount of advocacy, organization, and hard work has taken place in order to bring us this far in a relatively short period of time. Today is not only about bringing closure and healing for our community members, it is also about new beginnings and opportunities. Your Chief and Council remain committed and dedicated to advancing the First Nation and bettering the lives of their membership.”
Now that the community has voted in favour of accepting the Flood Claim Settlement, we will continue on with the formalizing and closure of this process. Updates will be forthcoming on the next steps involved. Please note: All information in the Settlement package is confidential until final signatures (First Nation, Province & Crown) are received.
