The Lac des Mille Lacs First Nation Indian Reserve was established by the terms of Treaty #3 under the Shebandowan Adhesion in 1873.  It was one of the first reserves under Treaty #3 to be surveyed because it was situated closest to the Red River / Dawson Routes from Thunder Bay on Lake Superior to the Prairies.  Represented by Chief Metassoqueneshawk, the Lac des Mille Lacs Ojibwe people claimed Lac des Mille Lacs and the lands extending north following the height of land between Lac Des Mille Lacs and the waters of Nipigon and Lac Seul.

The Lac des Mille Lacs Ojibwe – First Nation agreed to select land as reserves with the understanding that they would retain already improved lands such as fishing stations, garden sites, and rice beds, and would have first choice of undeveloped lands with these potential uses.

The Paypom Document is an original set of notes made for Chief Powasson at the signing of the 1873 treaty between the Ojibway Indians and the government of Canada at North West Angle on Lake of the Woods.

The notes differ in many respects from the printed version of the treaty which was delivered to the signatories by government officials sometime later. Recent treaty research indicates that the printed version may have been written a year before the 1873 North West Angle negotiations.
